Emily’s visit to the East Coast…

Our good friend from the great NW is out for a few days, and we’ve already had some fun around town.  Here’s a few shots of what we’ve been up to…

They made a trek to the Jersey shores this afternoon in the rain.  I, however, stayed back to hold down the fort, having already seen the shore on a nice day, and already beginning to imagine the Oregon Coast in the coming months.  It’s fun having friends visit, and Espen has sure been enjoying having Emily around!  So have we!

Joel - Thanks, Ben! Ah, yes, the Small World shot. Well, the cool thing about that one is that the light temperature coming off the overheads above Emily are much more yellow than the background, as there is a huge skylight that is letting in the daylight, which in contrast is much bluer. It gives a cool effect in setting her apart from the background. One of the great ways of making a subject pop is to set them in high contrast against the background with color. Bright clothing on dull colors, or vice-versa. I’m sure you know this, but the fun thing is that you can use that same technique with light temperatures. And it’s not just for digital photographers, but film as well. It can be harsh at times, so it’s best to use it tastefully, and when it works it’s always a fun effect. Thanks for asking!

B Robinson - Joel, these look great. How did you bring out the blues in the last shot at small world? Did you just just turn up the blue/purple/magenta of the saturation/luminance/hue when you opened it in Raw? Or was it something trickier? It looks great.
