Dogwood madness!!!

Dogwood madness!!! I know, it’s Cinco de Mayo, but I have no festive photos to present as I’m not in Portland to celebrate along the water front this year.  But we have been having our own festivities, as the dogwoods have been in full bloom lately.  There are so many in the area, so it...

Joel - Thanks, Ben! Ah, yes, the Small World shot. Well, the cool thing about that one is that the light temperature coming off the overheads above Emily are much more yellow than the background, as there is a huge skylight that is letting in the daylight, which in contrast is much bluer. It gives a cool effect in setting her apart from the background. One of the great ways of making a subject pop is to set them in high contrast against the background with color. Bright clothing on dull colors, or vice-versa. I’m sure you know this, but the fun thing is that you can use that same technique with light temperatures. And it’s not just for digital photographers, but film as well. It can be harsh at times, so it’s best to use it tastefully, and when it works it’s always a fun effect. Thanks for asking!

B Robinson - Joel, these look great. How did you bring out the blues in the last shot at small world? Did you just just turn up the blue/purple/magenta of the saturation/luminance/hue when you opened it in Raw? Or was it something trickier? It looks great.

Washington’s monument…

Washington’s monument… We had a great time strolling around Princeton last week as the weather improved dramatically.  One of the stops was at the Washington monument in town, of which Espen had a blast running around and climbing on everything he could pull himself up on (which was quite a bit!).  Here’s a shot of...

Bryan Rupp - This is a beautiful shot Joel, I love the feel of it! Too bad that lady doesn’t know about it and too bad her son doesn’t either, although he looks a little young to care about photographs. Great work Joel, glad that you’re updating regularly again! Hope you had a great day in Princeton today!

Fly Fishing in Jersey…

Fly Fishing in Jersey… It was an amazing day.  Although it was leaning on some high temperatures for most of the day, by the time Nate and I hit this local run to do some fly fishing it had cooled to a bearable degree, and the warm water eased against the rubber of our sandals....
